FAQs

Many common questions are addressed below. Please Contact us for more info or if you don’t see what you need!

Living Aboard

  • Guests will have a private v-berth cabin (queen bunk and single bunk) with your own head with shower.

  • Cooking, cleaning, and light boat maintenance will be shared equally amongst Captain and guests. I like the credo, "If thy cooks, thou shalt not clean." This is not a charter cruise; this is a learning platform for gaining valuable cruising skills.

  • On the first day of arrival, we will provision together to ensure each individual's dietary needs and preferences are met.

  • The boat is set up for couples' learning, so no more than two guests.

Travel & Logistics

  • Each learning session is custom tailored to each client's needs; we can schedule usually several months in advance for a mutually beneficial location. Kiana is usually located in the Caribbean or US East Coast.

  • 7 days is the normal cruise curation; each cruise can be tailored to individual requirements.

  • Bathing suits, shorts, t-shirts, rain gear, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, personal PFD with harness and tether (not necessarily required for day hops but required for any overnight passages), water shoes, hiking shoes, mask, fins, and snorkel, beach towel, PASSPORT, medications, seasickness meds.

Linens and shower towel will be provided.

I advise clients to pack just enough stuff to fit into a soft sided backpack. Roller luggage doesn't stow properly on board: if you bring it, you may be sleeping with it! (just kidding)

Sailing

  • Lesson planing is based upon intermediate to advanced sailing skills. This is not an introductory class. ASA classes are readily available to those looking for an Introduction to sailing.

  • From experience, teaching one’s own spouse can be a challenge. I offer patient, informative, supportive instruction equally to both partners in an effort to perform as a single cohesive crew.  My teaching ethic is to instill confidence in one’s ability to make them a better crew member.

  • Kiana is covered under a Charter Insurance policy and Captain Kevin has a Captain's liability policy

Experiences

  • Swimming, paddleboarding, snorkeling, hiking, lounging, waterfall and island tours, “Hashing” Adventure Hike (Google it!  Lotsa fun)

  • Kiana has four SCUBA tanks on board for use.  Cruise areas have many dive sites available for exploration.  I am not a SCUBA Divemaster so I cannot lead any dives.  If crew are dive certified and would like to join me and my wife on an individual dive that would be fun.  Insurance does not cover me for leading  SCUBA diving.

Boat Deliveries

  • At this time, delivery areas include Eastern seaboard US, Bahamas and Caribbean.

  • Captain Kevin holds $1 Million Liability insurance for yacht deliveries.
